(Ed's Note: I've borrowed this from the Muskingum County Plat Map of 1833 and centered on Zanesville proper for perspective. I think there is enough detail for our purpose.)

What a great map. I've zoomed up the detail from the scanned item which required a magnifying glass to pick out details. Joseph Resch and family arrived in Zanesville in this exact year, August/September to be exact. As you can see, the city already has great detail from the city planners. Joseph's arrival came from the east along the National Road, which is an extension of Main Street. The Y Bridge to the west, crossing the Muskingum, is visible. I'm assuming the little marks on the bridge indicate the bridge is covered, which it was. The original Court House is on Main Street in the center of the city, and Saint John's Catholic Church is at the north end of Fifth Street, plot 4. This church would later be rebuilt as Saint Thomas Aquinas by the English speaking Irish Catholics. The German speaking parishioners would build Saint Nicholas in 1842, at the intersection of Main and Greenwood Streets, approximately where Main curves to the southwest at the right edge of the map. Joseph's property is about 4 miles to the east southeast of this point. Below, is a panel from the same map. This article describes early land acquisition by Ebenezer Zane and Rufus Putnam. |
